The PYA is an Association run by yacht crew for yacht crew to represent the interests of professional crew. Their office staff includes ex-yacht crew and maritime lawyers and they are there to support crew throughout their career.
The PYA offers a huge range of services from issuing Yacht Rating Certificates, verifying Sea Service Testimonials, issuing Service Record Books and supporting a range of CoC Revalidation and Conversion applications. However, probably the best service offered by the PYA is the Members Assistance Service (MAS) where a dedicated team of former yacht captains and other yachting professionals take every individual case presented to them. They answer any work-related queries one might have about contracts, non-payment, repatriation, the possibility of a dispute or an actual one, or an issue onboard. Using their vast experience, they act as extra-judicial consultants, layingout the options one has in the specific matter at hand, the possibilities for events that might ensue and how to deal with those, the people or authorities one can contact and other things one might need, all in confidence of course. Recently, they have set up a similar confidential system for welfare related queries (harassment, bullying, abuse).
In addition, the PYA attends policy meetings with MCA and other administrators to ensure that yacht crew are being fairly represented, and work hard to ensure that the future of the Superyacht industry is being shaped to take into account the best interest of the people who actually live and work onboard yachts.
